The Rest of the Road Trip

Episode 5: The Twin Cities will be posted on 11-11-11. GET STOKED!

We're back on the East coast and Chlo is editing that episode as I update this blog... so I thought we should finish up the blog about the epic road trip we took to film all those episodes!

On our way out West, we made just a couple of stops after Kalispell. We spent a night in Spokane, WA... where we found the adorable Manito Park.

Sus & Zaxby in the rose garden @ Manito
Stud muffin.
After filming in Portland and Seattle (those episodes will be up soon) we made our way back East to film another episode in St. Louis! Here are a few highlights from that trip.

Gorgeous view over Lake City, CO

Hiking Phoenix park

"Love Lake," near Creede, CO

Chlo enjoying some Oklahoma Joe's in Kansas City

Best BBQ ever.

Oklahoma Joe's may be in a gas station... but it's FANTASTIC!

Look forward to all 4 new episodes: The Twin Cities, Portland, Seattle, and St. Louis- coming to you in the next few months!

Days 5 and 6!

Day 5- Helena, MT to Kalispell, MT
A pretty uneventful day... just getting closer to get to Glacier NP! But, Montana is a beautiful state- and we had a picnic at a nice little lake along the way. We've found picnicking to be a great way to stay on budget while road tripping!

Day 6- Glacier National Park
After dropping Zaxby off at doggie day care, we spent the day in Glacier National Park (entrance fee provided by our park pass- yay!) First, we drove the "Going to the Sun" road, the main road through the park.
Jackson Glacier

St. Mary's Lake

Taking in a view
We hiked the Hidden Lake Trail at Logan Pass - one of the most popular hikes.

The Hidden Lake overlook
There we saw tons of mountain goats- and Sus stalked them for a while.

Baby and parent!
Chlo got cornered by one!
We also saw some other wildlife.

Big horned sheep

Squirrels- sure they're not that rare, but this guy was adorable!

If you plan to visit Glacier, we recommend:
1. Spend more than one day. There is too much to see in a day, and a hike is a MUST!
2. Take the shuttles. There isn't enough parking near any of the main stops, especially Logan Pass.
3. Pack layers- as in many mountainous areas, the temperature changes drastically and quickly.

Day 4- and a bear!

Red Lodge, MT to Helena, MT

The Beartooth Highway- The single most beautiful road either of us has ever traveled. Absolutely stunning. If you ever are anywhere near this part of the country, make it a point to drive this highway that runs between Red Lodge and Cooke City, MT.

It's only about 70 miles long, but it's a slow, winding road- and you'll want to stop a lot for photos. It took us about 4 1/2 hrs. Another plus is that there's no charge to drive the road, whereas in nearby Yellowstone, you'll pay to enter. Yellowstone's also more crowded. (It didn't stop us from going through though- keep reading.)

Zaxby's first time in snow! He loved it.

A friend of ours who spent a summer in Montana recommended stopping at the Bear Tooth Cafe in Cooke City. It's very cute and has dog-friendly patio seating and really obscenely large nachos.

Cooke City is also very close to the West entrance to Yellowstone, and since we needed to travel West- we had to go. Also, we bought a National Park pass yesterday at Little Big Horn, so we wanted to take advantage of it! (Side note: Park passes are definitely a good idea if you road trip a lot. And they last a year!)

Yellowstone
Bison brothers.

Mammoth Hot Springs

We saw a bear!!

Cutie grizzly!
What a day! After leaving Yellowstone, we drove up to Helena for the night. If we did it again, we probably wouldn't go QUITE as far- since we took our time on the Bear Tooth & in Yellowstone, we were in the car for over 12 hours. So if you do it, maybe stay the night in Bozeman, MT, a cute town we stopped in for dinner.

Day 3

Rapid City, SD to Red Lodge, MT

Our two big stops for the day were:

1. Devil's Tower- America's first national monument! We got close to it but didn't actually pay to go up close, as none of the trails are dog-friendly and we're traveling with Zaxby. It's mostly cool because it's a huge rock face out in the middle of nowhere, though it's also considered sacred ground for many Indian tribes. People climb it all the time, and that would be fun, but we didn't have time for it, nor a guide to help us. But here are some photos!

2. The Little Big Horn Battlefield, aka Custer's last stand. Click here for a refresher course on the history of the place.

The black headstone (center) is where Custer fell.

Day 2

Bismarck, ND to Rapid City, SD

1. The world's largest cow in New Salem, ND. Yep. Buffalo yesterday, cow today. North Dakota is big on the "World's Largest" thing in general.

2. Another thing North Dakota has a lot of is sunflowers. Fields and fields of them. They're crazy tall. And they're pretty.

3. When heading towards South Dakota, we went a bit out of our way to travel via the Enchanted Highway. Basically some guy wanted to bring some more tourism to the area so he built tons of huge sculptures and placed them along a small highway in North Dakota. "If you build it, they will come." And we did. One of the sculptures (Geese in Flight, below) is supposedly the largest scrap metal sculpture in the world. ND definitely has a size complex.

When in Spearfish, SD, try their coffee!
4. After driving through lots and lots of nothingness in South Dakota, the town of Spearfish was a breath of fresh air. It's super cute and on the outskirts of the beautiful Black Hills, and we found a yummy coffee shop there with a clever name that we thought was worth a mention.

5. Mount Rushmore! Cool. Richie Rich, anyone? It's a little on the pricey side ($11 for parking), but worth it. Nearby Crazy Horse Memorial is unfinished and we were tipped off that for the price ($10/person or $27/car) it's a little underwhelming- and that you can basically see it all from outside the gate. So we did.

Can you name them?
What an honor...

Day 2 down! What to do next...
